The
City of Kaktovik has a population of about 300 and lies on the northern
tip of Barter Island, just off the north coast of Alaska. For
centuries it has been a place to gather and trade goods for the Inupiat
people of this region.
To fully understand Kaktovik
and its people, it is helpful to try and see the world from our
perspective. Living as we do on both land and sea, we often find
ourselves looking south, where our homes and animals lie and with our
backs to the water. That is why a number of years ago
cartographers from San Francisco State University worked with us to
develop a map of our homelands that best illustrates our unique point
